Melburne : International students finishing their studies in Hobart will now be able to stay and work in Tasmania for an extra year, after a change to temporary visa rules.
The University of Tasmania has welcomed the move, saying it puts Hobart in line with other regional centers across Australia. Officials hope the change will help fill job shortages in key industries such as health, information technology and agriculture.
For graduates, it means more time to gain local work experience and to plan their future in Australia. For employers, it offers a wider pool of skilled staff at a time when many sectors are struggling to find workers.
University leaders say the policy will also make Hobart more attractive for international students choosing where to study.
